Liverpool FC: Have Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam Answered the Critics?

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - AUGUST 27: Charlie Adam of Liverpool celebrates scoring his side's third goal with team mate Jordan Henderson (R) during the Barclays Premier League match between Liverpool and Bolton Wanderers at Anfield on August 27, 2011 in Liverpool, England. (Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)
(Bleacher Report)Jordan Henderson Joined the Liverpool Reds as their first major signing of the summer. The England U21 international and Sunderland midfielder came for the price tag of £20 million. In the BBC Sport article that broke the story Henderson had these comments:

"I'm over the moon, overjoyed to be here and I'm really looking forward to it."

"Obviously it's hard to leave your local club. I'm a Sunderland lad, I've supported them all my life.

"But I'm really looking forward to the future now and obviously this is a massive opportunity for me. I'm really excited by it."

However, the majority of fans were perplexed by the signing. Was the 20-year old really worth £20 million? David N'Gog was also originally part of the deal but that collapsed as the out of favor forward is currently looking to make a move to Bolton Wanderers.

Henderson was not really understood to be a major signing as the pundits immediately played it off as the youngster just being brought in because the Reds lacked the ability to attract top class talent.

What the press continued to forget was that Henderson has been a solid Premier League starting player since the 2009-10 season when he made 38 appearances for Sunderland while scoring two goals and providing 6 assists.

Last season for the 2010-11 campaign he again was a full time member of the Sunderland first team making 39 appearances scoring three goals and notching five assists to his teammates. Those two seasons had him well prepared for a transition to a new club.

He had bright spots in preseason for the Reds but was seen in limited amounts of time after having played for the England U21's in the European Championship for that age group during the beginning of summer.

Just as well he got off to a bright start with the Reds making his debut on opening day against his former club in what would eventually be a 1-1 draw between Liverpool and the Black Cats.

His second performance against Arsenal would also go well with the Reds grinding out an eventual 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

Henderson had one of his best games when the Reds traveled to Exeter City midweek for their Carling Cup match, and he would be the provider of the cross that found Luis Suarez for the opening goal.

However, the Saturday afternoon match against Bolton Wanderers proved to be his coming out party. The Reds started the game brightly and had several chance on goal in the first 20 minutes. But it would young Henderson that would get himself off the mark in front of his new fans to put the Reds in the lead.

The player made a first attempt that rolled back to him and he then bent it into the far top corner from just inside the penalty area on the right hand side. It was a sublime effort for the Englishman and it should be the first of many moments to come that answers many questions of him.

Another key fact is that as of Sunday morning he is tied joint second of the English Premier Leagues key passers category on 78. The player he is tied with is Stewart Downing, another criticized new Liverpool player.

Without a doubt I believe the 20-year old Wearside born player is truly on his way to making a great name for himself on Merseyside. I still cannot wait to see him combine with Andy Carroll for a goal, the elements of their former born and bred rivalry would make it a magical moment in many ways.

Charlie Adam has been in the same boat with Jordan Henderson since his arrival on Merseyside. Talking with LFC.tv he made these statements upon finally completing his deal to move to Liverpool:

"I am absolutely delighted to be here," Adam told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"It has been a long process but now I can't wait to get started and hopefully this will be a successful period in my career and in the club's history."

He added: "Liverpool is a massive club with terrific players and a terrific manager.

"I see this as the perfect development for me to come here, play with such wonderful players and hopefully help the team to win trophies, because that's the most important thing.

"I'm delighted to be able to walk out on the same pitch as some of the players here.

"There are good players at the club, top, top players who I want to learn from. I want to become a better player and hopefully bring something to the team.

"Hopefully we can have a successful period because it's been missing now for a couple of years.

"At the end of the day you get judged on trophies and as a footballer you want to win as many as you can."

"This club has had a lot of success over the years, so let's get back to doing that."

Without a doubt Adam was wanted by Kenny Dalglish, and the younger Scot was just as keen to make the move to Anfield. His deal was said to be worth £9 million which is about the same as he would have joined for in January of last season if he had been allowed.

He scored in his opening preseason game in the Reds Asian Tour, and continued to look decent throughout the Reds training games. The opening match against Sunderland saw him involved right away as he placed a free kick perfectly for Luis Suarez to nod it home and allowed the Uruguayan to make amends for the penalty he had just blasted 5 yards over the bar.

Adam looked to be developing his understanding with Lucas Leiva at the heart of the Liverpool midfield but he was still a getting used to his new teammates.

The second game against Arsenal was perhaps his worst performance so far as he gave the ball away more than the first match and his set pieces were not up to par. However, the Reds still found a way to get the three points.

Against Exeter he again looked in better shape as he made some great passes and set piece deliveries in the 76 minutes he was on the pitch.

But just as with Jordan Henderson, it would be the Bolton Wanderers clash that saw Adam become a true Liverpool player. He made great deliveries all day and it seemed only a matter of time before he would make an impact.

In the second half he lined up for a corner kick at the 52nd minute and his delivery was the best of the day as first half substitute for Martin Kelly, Martin Skrtel was celebrating the Reds second goal before Bolton Wanderers keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen knew what had happened.

The icing on the cake would be that Adam got off the mark as a Red just a minute later as he knocked one in from outside the box.

Adam just like both Henderson and Downing is in the top ten of the EPL's key passes charts with 64 holding down eighth place with Tottenham's Luka Modric. He is also seventh on the chart for the most total passes with 1883 showing just how much influence he has had on the midfield play since joining the Reds.

Conclusions

I can honestly say that they have both answered the majority of any questions I truly had to ask of them. When Sir Alex Ferguson said Charlie Adam's free kicks were worth £10 million a year he was not joking and I think more people may be believing that after Saturday.

Jordan Henderson looks to be a truly remarkable talent at his current pace, he honestly could be a beast in another couple of seasons. Steve Bruce said these words about his former charge when he left for Liverpool:

"First and foremost, we wish the kid (Henderson) well. He has had a meteoric rise, from being a youth team player here within two years to go and play for England and command the fee he has commanded.

"I sincerely wish him the best of luck.

"Because of the way he is as a boy, he has got an outstanding chance of being a really top, top player.

"Sometimes you have to see the bigger picture and realise that, okay, these things happen."

With such a bright future ahead for both players at Liverpool I believe they will both have a huge part to play as the Reds are looking to take any chance at Silverware they have this season with both the FA Cup and Carling Cup being as big of a focus as a possible league title challenge that might be more possible than many believe.

The Reds can rest feeling a job has been well done as for at least the next 12 hours they can enjoy siting at the top of the Barclay's Premier League table for the first time since May 9th, 2009 when they were so close to taking the title back from Manchester United, but failed to take advantage in the last three fixtures that season.

EPL Preview: Predicting the Liverpoll Starting XI vs. Bolton Wanderers

Michael Regan/Getty Images
(Bleacher Report)Liverpool are only two hours from facing off against Bolton. With the Reds having injuries to Glen Johnson, Raul Meireles and Steven Gerrard they are still not quite up to full strength.

However, they are much stronger than last season and have proven that.

The new boys seem to be settling in nicely. I am sure most of them will continue to hold onto their place in the first 11.

Jordan Henderson is the only player I expect to possibly be dropped, as Dirk Kuy'ts scoring history against Bolton could be a deciding factor for the Dutchman to start.

Here is a look at the Projected Reds Starting XI for today's match-up at Anfield......CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE SLIDESHOW.

Liverpool vs. Bolton: Match Preview and Team News for the Anfield Clash

Michael Regan/Getty Images
(Bleacher Report)As the Reds are preparing to face off in their third game of this new EPL season we are going to run down the most recent news from Anfield up to kickoff and in the evening after it is all settled.

The Reds face off against a tough Bolton Wanderers squad that is truly a more threatening side than many give them credit for. Owen Coyle has drastically turned the club around since he took over from Gary Megson halfway through the 2009-10 season.

Last year the Trotters looked a lock to finish in the top eight, but a late disastrous run of poor form in their last five games saw them drop drastically into the lower middle table.

However, despite that unfortunate result in their previous campaign they have come out once again firing on all cylinders with a superb opening day 4-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers. It was unfortunate to see them lose against Manchester City as their late comeback failed to materialize. If Coyle can rebuild his front line and continue to strengthen before the window closes they could fare very well in the first half.

Liverpool will hope to build on their results against both Arsenal and Exeter City after two straight victories. Kenny Dalglish will be keen to see his charges continue their run against Wanderers, and I do not foresee too many changes if any from last week's starting 11 other than I expect Luis Suarez to get his second league start of the season.

That being said let's get to the team news, transfer dealings, injury reports and all the latest as we head towards kickoff at 5:30 BST or 12:30pm EST depending where you are......CLICK HERE TO VIEW ALL THE UPDATES.

Liverpool FC: Grading Charlie Adam, Jose Enrique and the Anfield New Boys so Far

Michael Regan/Getty Images
(Bleacher Report)Liverpool have splashed a load of cash since their new owners took over from Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

With more than £100 million having been invested, if you combine their summer signings with those brought in during January there are many, many high hopes for Kenny Dalglish's side.

The primary goal for the club has to be Champions League qualification, but Dalglish will surely be aiming as high as possible, as a weekend victory against Arsenal proved the Reds could grind out a win in a difficult situation.

Granted the Gunners are in a bad spot, but it is still Arsene Wenger's club, and they have achieved more with less at different points during the Frenchman's brilliant reign.

That being said lets take a quick look at the Red's five newest signings, and how they have shown their worth so far......CLICK TO START THE SLIDESHOW.

Liverpool FC: Luis Suarez, Charlie Adam and the Reds Starting XI vs. Arsenal

Shaun Botterill/Getty Images
(Bleacher Report)Liverpool are out to achieve their first win of the season, and a weakened Arsenal Gunners side looks to be on the menu.

The Reds should have taken a 2-1 victory at home on opening day, while Arsenal slumped to an away draw at St. James Park against Newcastle United.

With the Reds almost fully fit throughout the entire roster, they have the upper hand, and Kenny Dalglish will be willing his charges to victory.

I expect Luis Suarez to be primary creative cog for the Reds, as he will be all over the ball and the pitch up front.

Andy Carroll and Dirk Kuyt I assume will be the biggest goal threats, as the Reds front two may turn more to a front three at times with Kuyt or Downing playing in through the middle off the wings......CLICK HERE TO START THE SLIDESHOW.

Premier League Transfers: Ranking the 20 Worst Deals so Far

Shaun Botterill/Getty Images
(Bleacher Report)A lot of moves in and out of the clubs in the English Premier League this summer have been rather debatable.

Whether it be the price for the player, or his lack of experience or age, it has been one disapproving story after another for so many of this summers movers and shakers.

All that has prompted a quick look at some of the worst signings that have been discussed this summer.

The criteria is not necessarily based on skill or talent, but it can also be based on overpayment and likelihood of success for the player.

Now that we have that discussed, here is a look at 20 of the worst deals in the EPL so far......CLICK TO VIEW SLIDESHOW.

Liverpool FC: Suarez, Adam, Downing and Carroll Give Reds Future Great Hope

Clive Brunskill/Getty Images
(Bleacher Report)Despite the Reds being held to a draw in their home opener, their newer faces showed a lot of promise for the future.

Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez continue to prove they will be bright starts of the future and "El Pistolero" in particular looks to be the most endeared icon of the new batch so far.

The recent arrivals of Charlie Adam and Stewart Downing are also looking as though they will be more key to the future of Liverpool than many may have believed them to be.

After the opening weekend we can take a look at what they showed us on Saturday and perhaps take away that this is a bright attacking combination for the future......CLICK TO VIEW SLIDESHOW.

Dalglish Ecstatic over Continued Availability of Funds

Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images
(Bleacher Report)Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has been quoted in the Daily Mirror extensively about his excitement for the upcoming season and his gratefulness to having overwhelming support from his club owners.

The Scot has splashed a ton of cash over the last eight months with the signings of Andy Carroll, Luis Suarez, Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Alexander Doni, Stewart Downing, and just yesterday Jose Enrique.

All seven players have been brought in with specific purpose in the eyes of many fans, but the real issue has to be the overwhelming amount of fringe players left to be offloaded. However, it seems their is no end in sight for the club's spending at the moment.

Dalglish and the fans seem to have gotten just what they want this season with the owners showing no signs of letting up in hopes to bring silverware back to Anfield as soon as the coming season.

King Kenny has this to say in his interview quoted in the Mirror:

“The owners want their investment in a red shirt, and we’re delighted with the business we’ve done this summer."

“We are happy with the quality of the people we have brought in. Of course we will be judged by what happens on the pitch rather than off it but at the moment it’s positive.

“The five guys we’ve brought in have strengthened the quality and also the strength in depth of the squad, and we are a lot stronger than last year.”

It is believed that Dalglish could be expecting to make a surprise title push this season as the Reds are taking their missing out of European football as an advantage over the other top six clubs that will deal with even more cramped schedules.

“Every club wants to win trophies, and this is an exciting time - it’s a bit like Christmas day for the kids, isn’t it?”

“You need to win a lot of matches to win a championship, but you don’t need to win many to win a cup, so we’ll just focus on getting as many positives results as we can.

“Now we just have to see if we’ve made the right decisions. [Saturday's game] is when we have to enhance that positivity - let’s go on the pitch.”

There is no doubt that the Reds are stronger this season than in the last two and should at a minimum push themselves into the top three.

Liverpool V Sunderland: 6 Key Facts to Know Heading in Reds' EPL Opener

Andy Carroll Leads the Liverpool Attack to Battle Against a Familiar Foe.
Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images
(Bleacher Report)Liverpool's last meeting with Sunderland saw them take a 2-0 victory at the Stadium of Light back to Anfield after suffering a 2-2 Draw at home earlier in the season.

Kenny Dalglish will want his charges to start the season off on the right foot with a key opening day victory in front of the Kop to set the tone for his first full season back in charge.

He will be without Steven Gerrard as the Captain is still recovering from his operation over the Summer. Luis Suarez is also most likely to miss out as he is still returning to full match fitness, but do not be surprised if he comes on at the 60th minute if the Reds were to be in trouble.

It is looking to be a great opening day for the Reds this year in perhaps the most highly anticipated season in years. With that in mind here are sixth facts to keep in mind about this weekends upcoming fixture.

Jordan Henderson Talking Personal Terms for Five Year Deal with Liverpool

Scott Heavey/Getty Images
(Bleacher Report)It looks like the Reds got the first of their men this summer. Sunderland's hometown England U21 starlet Jordan Henderson is apparently on his way to Melwood to complete a medical and finish negotiating personal terms on a five-year deal to see him spend his prime growth years in Liverpool Red.

The deal also includes David Ngog as a make weight. The deal called for a £20m fee for Henderson but the inclusion of £7m valued Ngog will reduce the outplay of Liverpool to £13m and eliviate some wage bill room for the incoming player.

Ngog was a good steward for Liverpool but never looked to have progressed since the young Frenchman was brought in by Rafa Benitez.

Henderson will be the first of many new Reds I expect to see this summer as Fenway Sports Group and leading man John W. Henry and Damien Camolli continue to show they are committed to signing youthful talent to develope an all new Liverpool squad for the future.

Jordan Henderson Wants Liverpool Mover over Manchester United

David Cannon/Getty Images
(Bleacher Report) An £18.5 million move appears what is the main focus in a Liverpool deal with Sunderland for young midfield starlet Jordan Henderson. The transfer has been gathering steam in the press all weekend, and now it looks like the youngster wants his agent, manager and all involved to get the deal done and dusted as soon as possible.

In what also appears a great part for the Reds is that the Daily Mail is reporting that Henderson wants the move to Anfield over a move to current Premier League Champions Manchester United.

Jordan Henderson Becoming a Primary Target for Liverpool Manager Kenny Dalglish

Clive Mason/Getty Images
(Bleacher Report) Sunderland's 20-year old midfielder Jordan Henderson is becoming a hot prospect for the Reds in recent weeks. With a high transfer fee estimated at around £20 million it is expected that it may fall through.

However, this also has just as high of a possibility of going through because of his age and the new youth injection policy of Fenway Sports Group. Henderson would be a great youthful add to a squad already stocked with young talent.
